Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes the blood vessels in the face to become visible giving the face and sometimes the neck and chest, a red or flushed appearance. Rosacea also manifests as small, pus-filled bumps. The cause for rosacea is not yet known and many that are affected by it are unaware of their condition.
Rosacea can be effectively treated with Nordlys Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL uses controlled light in specific wavelengths to mitigate inflammation, redness, pimples, and uneven skin tone, all of which are common side effects of rosacea. IPL offers a gentle and long-lasting solution for those who suffer from rosacea by gradually and naturally improving the skin’s appearance.
At the root of every acne breakout is a clogged pore. Pores are the opening that surrounds each hair follicle, covering every inch of your face and playing an important role for your skin as they house your sebaceous glands.
Those glands secrete sebum (oil) through the pore’s opening which helps to protect the skin and maintain its suppleness. The problem comes when pores get clogged with dirt, dead skin, excess oil, and potentially bacteria leading to breakouts. The clog becomes a comedo (more commonly known as blackheads and whiteheads).
If bacteria come into contact with the comedo, it can become inflamed and turns into a papule (a reddish pimple) or a pustule (a papule that’s filled with pus). There are also the more severe forms of acne which include
nodular and cystic acne, both of which form beneath the surface of the skin and are more likely to leave behind a scar.
For some, a more extensive skincare routine including cleansing and exfoliating regularly can help to prevent acne. For others, however, the situation is much more complicated. In these situations, a basic skincare regimen and over-the-counter medications may not be enough to get your skin back to the point of being acne-free.
But you don’t have to go it alone. If you’ve tried these strategies and haven’t seen any progress, Virginia Surgical Arts offers you the next step. Our skincare professionals will not only be able to nail down the source of your acne (which aids in finding the best way to treat it) but we also offer in-office treatments specifically meant to target acne, rosacea, and scarring.
IPL uses broad-spectrum visible light pulses to eliminate broken blood vessels, hyperpigmentation, redness, and other common skin conditions. It is commonly used to treat:
The device used in IPL produces a heating effect on the skin that breaks apart red blood cells which can cause redness.
IPL is effective at killing bacteria and halting the body’s overproduction of sebum. The treatment also increases collagen production and helps to improve the look of acne scars.
Acne Treatment Benefits for Clients:
IPL Acne treatments are perfect for patients with stubborn acne breakouts that do not respond to prescription medication and other treatment modalities. Our Nordlys light device concentrates the light into individual pulses that target acne-causing bacteria.
This results in a decrease of acne lesions by approximately 40%. This modality of treatment offers patients a long remission time between sessions without any drug-related side effects.
IPL is also used to treat spider veins, broken capillaries, age spots, hyperpigmentation, and freckles.
Rosacea’s inflammation of cheeks and face, and acne’s pits and scars respond to IPL after only one treatment, although additional sessions may provide more benefit. Skin tone will be more normal, with less pronounced redness within one week after treatment.

Prior to the treatment, your skin will be treated with a cooling gel. IPL treatments are not painful for most patients but it can leave the skin feeling warm as the light pulses over the skin. The cooling gel will help to counteract the warming sensation keeping you comfortable during your treatment.
You will then be given a pair of protective goggles and your Virginia Surgical Arts skincare specialist will pass the IPL device over your skin. Treating a single area may take about 30 minutes.
The IPL acne treatment is fairly quick for those patients on a tight schedule and there is no downtime. Following the treatment, you can return to work or your usual activities. Your skin may look red for about an hour or two but you should not experience any pain.
You will likely notice a difference in your skin’s appearance after just one treatment but patients typically see the best results after six treatments spaced about three to four weeks apart.
Virginia Surgical Arts is proud to be one of the few providers in the area who offer this effective treatment.
