Many patients are looking for ways to improve the look, color and texture of their skin without the down time typically associated with surgical procedures. Virginia Surgical Arts offers microneedling treatments for improving your skin’s appearance. This minimally invasive, in-office skin rejuvenation treatment can improve fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks and many other conditions.
There are many microneedling systems out there, but VSA firmly believes SkinPen is the best. It is the only U.S. engineered and manufactured microneedling device on the market, with patent-pending single use cartridges. Both our office and our patients can have peace of mind with a safe, superior device they can trust.
SkinPen is a medical grade, state-of-the-art microneedling device designed to stimulate your skin’s natural ability to repair itself. It initiates a controlled skin healing response by creating a series of hundreds of vertical microscopic channels into the dermis. This automatically triggers new collagen growth free of scar tissue formation with very little downtime.
SkinPen microneedling helps to address issues, including:
Microneedling is a very safe and well tolerated office procedure. Safely used on patients of all skin-types, microneedling can be performed all-year, even during the summer, a time when lasers are not recommended.
Though very little downtime is needed after a microneedling treatment, patients can expect mild redness and swelling which usually subsides within 24 hours. One should always be careful of sun exposure following a treatment. The redness, swelling and tenderness that may follow the procedure feels similar to a mild sunburn.
After just one day, patients may return to normal activities and are able to conceal most of the signs of treatment with makeup.
The skin’s appearance will begin to improve as the body’s healing process promotes the production of healthy new cells and extracellular substances (e.g., collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid).
Multiple sessions are recommended to achieve optimal microneedling results. 3-4 treatments are required for best results and up to 6 treatments for more severe scarring. For anti-aging, 1-2 treatments a year.
Before coming in for your microneedling treatment, there are certain things you should be aware of. At Virginia Surgical Arts, we recommend that clients should avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements at least 4 days prior to the procedure. We also advise against the use of anticoagulants in the same time frame before the procedure. Clients who are on prescription medications should speak to their doctors for recommendations.
We attend to all kinds of clients and will educate each client on what to expect from the procedure. As part of helping clients to prepare for the procedure, we advise that clients must not have any new permanent makeup or injectables near the treatment area. Clients who have recently had a permanent tattoo before, makeup, or injectable are advised to see our microneedling consultant for personalized advice. Usually, we recommend that such clients wait at least two weeks for the injectable or permanent makeup to heal before the microneedling procedure.
Clients should use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more daily. This is because we cannot work on sunburnt skin. Please note that if your skin has become sensitized, sunburnt, or compromised in any way, we may be unable to work on it until it has fully healed.
While preparing for your microneedling procedure, avoid using new skincare products that may affect the chemical balance of your skin. Also, check existing skincare products for the presence of hydroquinone, Benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A., astringents, glycolic or salicylic acids, and bleaching agents. If any of these are present in your skincare products, avoid its use at least three days to microneedling treatment. If you have been prescribed these skincare products containing these compounds, please speak to our technician at Virginia Surgical Arts before the procedure is started.
In preparation for microneedling, avoid plucking or waxing the area that is to be worked on. Stay away from plucking or waxing the area for at least one week before the microneedling procedure. Also, avoid using nail-type products or bleach on the area at least two weeks before your microneedling appointment.
After your microneedling appointment, avoid exposure to excessive sunlight. Also stay away from self-tanning lotions, sprays, and other products for at least 48 hours after treatment. Ensure to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily after your microneedling appointment.
You should also avoid engaging in strenuous activities, saunas, excessively hot showers, and swimming in chlorinated water.
Avoid contact with irritants including skincare products that contain common suspect chemicals like hydroquinone, Benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A., astringents, glycolic or salicylic acids, and bleaching agents. This should be done for at least 7 days after the microneedling appointment.
Avoid simultaneous clinic treatments including Laser IPL, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, injectables, and more for at least two weeks after your microneedling treatment.
Avoid plucking or waxing the treated area for no less than one week after the procedure has been completed. Also, avoid using skin-sensitive products, nail-type products, and bleach. Makeup can be applied after the first 48 hours have elapsed.
Microneedling involves the use of sterilized needles to pick the skin. This cosmetic procedure is done using tiny sterilized needles. The wounds created by this action, although small, cause the body to produce more organic compounds like elastin and collagen. These compounds help the skin to look youthful. This cosmetic procedure may also be referred to as collagen induction therapy.
Results from microneedling are typically visible in four to six weeks. Results from this cosmetic procedure become visible as soon as the deepest layers of the skin penetrated by the microneedles begin to heal. The healing of the micro-wounds triggers the production of collagen and elastin. These natural compounds leave the skin smooth and with visible results after four to six weeks.
Microneedling, when done properly and handled by experienced professionals, will leave the skin looking younger, smoother, and healthier. However, the procedure, over a period, can be damaging to the skin. Also, if the procedure is not performed by the right hands and in the right way, it may negatively affect the skin.
